S21-Acorn and Oak Leaves Badge

The meaning of this badge is not entirely clear. The FitzAlan Earls of Arundel may have used it as a livery badge. As such it would have been used as a means of identifying the household and followers of this noble family.

Alternatively, the acorn can be used to symbolise life, immortality and strength. It may be for this reason that the acorn was so widely used for decoration on all manner of medieval items.

14th-15th centuries.
